LONDON AMUSEMENTS
RESTRICTIONS IRKSOME MOVE FOR REVISION LONDON, Oct. 3. Cinema and theatre authorities in London are appealing for a general revision of wartime restrictions on houses of entertainment, as, it is claimed, closed theatres mean the opening up of “shady bottle clubs and night joints.'' Last week 12 cinemas in the immediate area, of the West End were the only ones closing at (i p.m.; the remainder closed at 10 p.m. ■rhe secretary of the Theatrical Managers’ Association points out that recreation for the people is essential, and adds that the whole of the West End theatres have a capacity of 30,000, and that the matinees to which at present those theatres are limited do no pay.
He urges the authorities to accept “staggered” times for the hours of theatres, thus ensuring a lack of unwieldy crowds in the streets when the times of performances are identical.
That there is a feeling of optimism as to the favourable outcome of the proposals is suggested by the numerous productions which are in course of preparation.
ii Film producers, fearing that the film quota may be allowed to lapse, are petitioning the authorities, and are pointing out that many big productions are already prepared to make an immediate start.
