EMPIRE AIR FORCES
TRAINING OF PERSONNEL SHARING OF COST U.S. PLANE PURCHASES (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 13, 9 a.m.) OTTAWA, Oct. 11. It is authoritatively stated that the cost of the Empire air traiining scheme, running into “hundreds of millions of dollars,” will be borne by the United Kingdom, 50 per cent; Canada, 25 per cent; and Australia and New Zealand; 12£ per cent each. It is anticipated that the trainees will remain on the payrolls of thenparent Governments. When the scheme is in full operation planes will be manufactured in Canada, but until then, provided the American embargo on the sale of arms and implements of war is repealed, heavy purchases of trainers and fighters will be made from the United Stales. The plan offers an inducement to United Stales’ manufacturers to open Canadian factories. It is considered here that London estimates that 25,000 machines are involved is large and is probably based on a long-term policy.
