THREATENED SHIP NEW YORK ARRIVAL AMERICAN ESCORT CAPTAIN’S COMMENT (Reed. Oct. 13, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 12.
The American steamer, Iroquois, concerning which the German naval commander, Admiral Raeder, haa issued a warning that she would v*. sunk under circumstances similar to those connected with the loss of the Athenia, arrived safely at New York with her 500 passengers at 9.30 p.m. last evening.
The Iroquois was sighted off Long Island, accompanied by an escort of destroyers and five naval air planes. Passengers were walking the decks unconcernedly. Reception of Warning: When the vessel reached port the master, Captain E. A. Chelton, said he received the warning whet- 2000 miles from New York. He advised the officers, but did not tell the passengers. The baggage of passengers was searched for explosives. When a cutter and two destroyers appeared, he explained the situation to the passengers. There was no hysteria. On the contrary, they cheered. He said that personally, he did noi believe that the threat of sinking would be put into effect.
