SUBMARINE SIGHTED
AMERICAN COASF (Reed. Oct. 9, 9 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. A message from Hyde Park states that President Roosevelt revealed that a foreign submarine was sighted yesterday, 15 miles off Miami. He declined to disclose its nationality, but pointed out that its mere presence within the “safety zone” does not represent a violation. A message from Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands, states that workmen sighted a submarine off the northern coast of St. Thomas on Wednesday. The submarine, for which a search was instituted, submerged on the approach of a United States destroyer. A report from Vera Cruz, Mexico, states that two Mexican coastguard cutters have left to form the nucleus of a patrol between Tampico and Puerto, Mexico, to prevent the unauthorised departure of German vessels lying in Gulf ports.
