SPLENDID PROGRESS

TRIBUTE TO OFFICERS POVERTY BAY CLUB “As a foundation member I have watched with much pleasure the development of the club. Each successive season has brought new members and has seen the club more prosperous than ever-. This splendid progress has been due to the excellent service rendered by the officers of the club,” declared Mr. E. E. Somervell, president of the Poevrty Bay Bowling Club, in addressing the gathering on his green on Saturday. Mr. Somervell extended a hearty welcome to the bowlers present, who included representatives of the town and country clubs. Special reference was made by the speaker to the assistance received from the ladies of the croquet club and of the fine work rendered by the green superintendent and the greenkeeper. A letter was received from the Strangers’ Club and a telegram from the Tolaga Bay club, extending best wishes for a successful, season. Mr. J, K. Popple, vice-president of the Gisborne and East Coast Bowling Centre, represented the centre at the function and said it was pleasing to see such a large muster of bowlers. He congratulated the cltib on the good condition of its greens and mentioned that several other clubs affiliated to the centre would be holding similar functions shortly, and on behalf of those clubs he extended a cordial welcome to the bowlers to be present. Mr. Popple wished the club a most successful and happy "season. The season was declared officially open with the playing of the first bowl by Mrs. Somervell, who was warmly congratulated on her well-directed shot. The bowlers also witnessed the official opening of the croquet lawns, which was carried out by Mrs. Somervell, as president of the Croquet Club. Mrs. D. W. McKeague, president of the Gisborne Croquet Club, conveyed her club’s good wishes and, following the presentation of a posy to Mrs. Somervell, Mr. Somervell drove the first ball.
