THREE COURSES

POSSIBLE OFFENSIVE GERMAN ALTERNATIVES OUTLOOK IN WEST OPINIONS IN PARIS (Reed. Oct. 6, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 4. The Paris correspondent'of the New York Times says it is considered that a frontal attack by the German forces on the Western Front, however successful, would inevitably expend itself on the Maginot Line. Its value would be chiefly moral, namely, to repel the enemy from German soil. “A second possibility is an attack on both the French wings simultaneously; that is to say, along the Moselle westward,” continues the correspondent. “A third is to attempt an enveloping movement through neutral territory. “There are no other possibilities, except protracted passive resistance behind the West Wall. The French believe that this could not be adopted, since it would provide time to bring the British armies into action. Rather it is believed in Paris that, should the ‘peace offensive’ prove abortive, the Germans cannot but attack by the three ways above mentioned.”
