The clerk of the court in Opotiki, Mr. A. E. Johnson, has been called up for service in the volunteer army and his position will be filled during his absence >by Mr. R. L. Halke, of the Auckland court staff. Mr. J'. H. Luxford, S.M., Wellington, will arrive at Gisborne during the week-end and will preside during the sittings of the Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Mr. Luxford will leave Gisborne on Thursday morning to hear cases in Tauranga and Te Puke on Thursday and Friday respectively. Mr. F. H. Elliott, T. and G. Mutual Life Assurance Society representative, Gisborne, has been appointed to a similar position in Napier. Mr. Elliott has been stationed in Gisborne for five years and has taken an active part in sport and lodge activities here. He is a member of the Poverty Bay Bowling Club and has lifted a number of bowling trophies in local tournaments. Mr. Elliott expects to leave Gisborne morrow week. The best wishes of members of the Wamui Surf Life-Saving Club were extended yesterday afternoon to two of their number, Messrs. S. W. Bruce and J. Campbell, whose marriages are to be celebrated in the near future. The presentation of sets of cutlery was carried out by Mr. J. R. Beckett and further reference to the value of the work of the two guests for the movement in Gisborne was made by Messrs D. F. Muir and A. H. De Costa. The recipients suitably replied. The congratulations of the Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association (Auckland) were extended yesterday afternoon to Mr. G. V. Merton, the recently-appointed resident A,A. patrol for the district. On the motion of Mr. H. H. De Costa, seconded by Mr. F. R. Bould, it was decided to write to Mr. D. M. McGregor, regretting his transfer and advising him of the appreciation of his services while patrol in Gisborne. Mr. McGregor has been transferred to the Whangarei office of the association.
