TE KARAKA GOLF

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS SEMI-FINALS PLAYED BRADLEY BEST OF MEN The weather was ideal for finalists and semi-finalists in the championships of the Waikohu Golf Club. The greens were sticky after the rain and a light north-east breeze made play tricky, nevertheless some very close matches completed the sections. The ladies competing for the Bullivarit Trophy played a straight 27 holes and after keen competition the winner proved to be Mrs. C. Gaulcrodger, 145 —25 —120, equalling the s.s., 120. In the men’s semi-finals of the senior championship W. Lultrell defeated J. L. Clarkson, 2 up. In the filial-E. Bradlev'defeated .W. Luttrell, 2 and 1. - The' finalists ' played ■ ’-steady golf throughout the 36 holes, and as these players are both on the same handicap 'the result would be only on the form for the day. The new champion, E. Bradley, played consistently and his iron play was splendid. On the other hand, the veteran, W. Luttrell, had a day off with his approaches and had to sink many long putts to hold his opponent. Luttrell has to his credit the honour for tlie fifth year of holding the record for the best score recorded on the links. At one period the Poverty Bay professional, W. Smith, lowered the record, but only temporarily, Luttrell again reducing the figure by another *hree strokes, the new course score being now 73, s.s. 68. In the semi-finals of the men’s junior championship W. Bruce defeated W. Scott, 3 and 1, and the final will be played next week-end between S. Te Paa and W. Bruce. Te Paa plays a steady game, but his opponent is a mighty hitter and it is probable that the eighteenth hole will be the deciding factor. Ladies’ Championships Mrs. Tait annexed the honours, in the ladies’ junior championship and the win was well merited. In the ladies’ senior championship Mrs. C. Gaukrodger defeated Mrs. H. O’Connell, 1 up, in the semi-fihal. Both have been playing remarkably good golf. As it is Mrs. O’Connell’s first year in this section, she deserves credit for her splendid effort against a steady opponent, During the season an eclectic com--1 petition has been recorded and only wo 18-hole cards have been completed, these being W. Luttrell, 51, j.s. 68, and E. Ruru 56. Ladles, nine holes: Miss L. Ruru, 28, s.s. 40. and .irs. Burnett, 32. The holders of the Ruru Ferns for i 939 are W. Luttrell and Miss L. Ruru, who thus qualify to have their names nscribed on the Luttrell Promoter Shield. A committee meeting will be held next Tuesday to make arrangements for the closing of the season. On October 15, a full muster of all players is requested at the clubhouse at 10 a.m., when the president, Mr. M. J. Kyne, will present the trophies won this season. In the afternoon a captain v. secretary match will be played. A list of players wishing to take part will be posted in the clubhouse.
