WAIROA ATHLETICS SUCCESSFUL SEASON FIRST ANNUAL REPORT (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “A review of the first season s activities reveals that excellent . progress has been made in establishing T.e club in Wairoa,.and tne committee is more than satisfied with the re suit,” states the secretary of the Vairoa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, *Mr. W. A. Brownlie, in his 1 annual report, which will be presented at the first annual meeting of the club in St. Andrews’ Hall on Monday evening. •‘Owing to the many difficulties in preparing and equipping the sports pound,” continues the report, "it was uot until mid-January that we were able to commence with our meetings, ‘.hcrefore our season was restricted to inly- three months, during which time ■ e-held-rive club meetings,-a championship meeting and the inter-club meeting with the Gisborne and Napier Hubs. Satisfactory Prices “The entries were, on the whole, .atisfactory and with a little improvement several variations may be made u the programme. It was pleasing to note that entries for the held events increased at the end of the season, and we anticipate little difficulty in ,-xpanding this section of the programme, we feel that there is ample material for the different events and vith a little coaching much improvement should be shown. An effort to commence hurdling will be made thi* year. The entries for ladies’ events it two of the meetings were very good and a continuation of their interest would assist the club to a great extent. “The public support was most gratifying,” adds the report, “and we are indebted to all who assisted us by their regular attendance at the meetngs; the attendances were in excess of our expectations. “The club has not yet been represented on the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay centre, but will be this season. A team of six athletes represented the club at the Hawke’s Bay provincial championships, two minor placings being gained. “Financially the season was most ■successful. After meeting all commitments a balance of over £ll was shewn, this after all gear and lighting ociuipment had been paid for. Fur.hor expenditure will be necessary ‘his season to obtain necessary gear.”
All who have helped the club are hanked in the report.
