SCOW HITS BEACON
DAMAGE AT AUCKLAND (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. Some damage was done to the Sandspit beacon, on the harbour side of North Head, on Tuesday by the scow Haere a’s she was outward-bound for Parengarenga. The pile structure on which the beacon lantern stands was little affected when the scow collided with the beacon, but the large cylinder holding the lantern was pushed over to an angle of about 45 degrees. However, the lamp continued to function, and temporary repairs affected will ensure that the beacon will continue in operation. The iHaere left port about 7 a.m. and fouled the beacon while passing out of the harbour. The master., Captain E. Norton, ’ after standing off to view the extent of the damage, put into the Devonport wharf to report the mishap. He then continued his voyage to the North Auckland port.
