PRECIPITATE ACTION
INCOME TAX BILL BUSSINESSMEN PROTEST (Pin- Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Associated Chambers of Commerce, in a statement, say that they are at a loss to understand the Government’s precipitate action in rushing the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill through. There was no claim whatever for urgency. It could have been dealt with at next year’s session without any of the effect being lost. “We are forced to the conclusion that the Government did not intend to give any opportunity for proper representations to be made on the contentious clauses of the bill, ’ the statement proceeds.. An expert committee of the association had gone through the bill, clause by clause yesterday, and was astounded that such radical departures from taxation methods, as the bill contained, should be foisted on the country in the manner juSt seen. They had urged that, the bill be referred to an appropriate committee of the House to enable evidence to be heard in accordance with the ordinary practice and democratic procedure, and there were imperative representations they had been anxious and ready to give.
