Judge’s Effective Comment

A pointed comment by Mr. Justice Call an in the opening stages o£ a family dispute in the Supreme Court. Auckland, led to an agreement being reached between the parties, although previous efforts to effect a settlement had failed. “The court has no intention of running away from its duty,’ His Honour said, “but thinks it not inappropriate to say that it is a very great pity to see a father and son come in this unpleasant public way to settle this matter. Families ought to be able to arrange money matters without the court.” Both counsel said they had already made every effort in that direction, but would be pleased to try again in view of what His Honour had said. The court adjourned and shortly afterward it was reported that a private settlement had been effected.
