WATERSIDER GAOLED

STOLEN TIN OF MILK SEVEN DAYS’ GAOL (For Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. “This sort of thing that has been going on for years now, and it is very difficult to stop,” said the magistrate, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, in the Police Court to-day, in convicting David Kinnear, a watersider, for the theft of a tin oi condensed milk valued at 9d. He imposed a sentence of seven days’ imprisonment. The magistrate said" that despite the man’s excellent record there was no doubt that he had iied about the matter. He could not accept the proposition as to his good intentions. The accused had said that the tin 101 l out on the wharf from a damaged case. He could not get it back and took it to his coat with the intention of returning it to the shed. A ship’s mate said he saw the accused take the tin from a broken case and put it beneath his waistcoat and then make for his coat which was hanging nearby, put the tin in his pocket and cover it with a handkerchief.

Counsel for the accused agreed that the court was not concerned with the question of a 9d tin of milk, but with he question as to whether cargo had been pilfered.
