BRITISH MALAYA

COLONISING EFFORTS ADDRESS TO YOUNG MEN An address entitled “British Malaya” was given by Mr. A. J. Pope at last evening’s meeting of the Gisborne Young Business Men’s Club. The chairman for the evening was Mr A. M. Terry, who introduced the lecturer. Mr. Pope outlined the origin of the Malayan people and gave a brief review of their history since they came into contact with Euro--peans. First, the Portuguese and then the Dutch tried to colonise the country, but finally the British were successful, mainly through the efforts of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. The speaker gave information concerning ihe industries of Malaya, tin, rubber, gold, and rice being the most important exports. Stories about the Malays and the sultans of the different States provided some amusing anecdotes. In thanking the lecturer for his address, Mr. D. Goldsmith declared that it was undoubtedly one of the most interesting talks ever given to the club. The chairman mentioned the calling up of three members, Messrs. D. K. McLaughlan, A. Eastwood and J. Forster, for military service. On October 17 a combined tea will be held in conjunction with the Gisborne Business Women’s Club,
