HITLER DEMAND
OPEN STAND IN WAR SUPPORT TO NAZI CAUSE INDICATION OF REFUSAL CIANO’S VISIT TO BERLIN (Elec. Tel. Copyright— United Press Assn.) (Reed. Oct. 2, 3 p.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 1. The Rome correspondent of the New York Times says that the Italians doubt whether Herr Hitler will try to involve Italy militarily, aad even if he tried a firm refusal is indicated. It is suggested that the purpose of the invitation to the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, to visit Berlin might be to receive an explanation of the Russo-German relations or to demand a clarification of Italy’s position, but the Italians do not 'believe that Herr Hitler would dare present an ultimatum demanding that Italy should enter the war on behalf of Germany.
The visit probably will settle nothing, but it is regarded as a development of the utmost importance. Gsi it eventually nfay depend the extent to which Herr Hitler is prepared to go in attempting to force Italy to take a definite stand, in which he failed at Berchtesgaden on August 12.
