MARRIAGES INCREASE The interesting feature of the vital statistics in Gisborne for the past month is the large increase in the number of marriages, the total, 40, comparing with 16 in September, 1938. There was . a decrease in the number of births, making the decline for the year to date 39. However, to balance that there was a substantial decrease in the number of deaths in Gisborne.

The figures for the past month are as follows, the comparative totals for the same month last year being shown in parentheses: —Births, 41 (53L deaths, 18 (24); marriage notices. 40 marriages by registrar, 10 (4). For the year to date the statistics are as follows, comparative figures being shown in parentheses: Births, 349 (388): deaths, 157 (194); marriage notices, 197 (159); marriages by registrar, 42 (35).
