PLIGHT OF ESTONIA
GUNS INSUFFICIENT AIRCRAFT DEFENCES CAPITULATION MOVE ('Reed. Oct. 2, 9 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. The New York TimesMtalian correspondent says well-informed quarters believe that <M. ‘Molotov abandoned the severer terms in respect to Estonia, including the occupation of Tallinn and the stationing of Soviet troops throughout the country, owing to the discussions and suggestions of Herr von Ribbentrop and M. Stalin. The prospect was once so dark the army leaders were inclined to proposegeneral mobilisation, but were dissuaded by the understanding that it would bring immediate invasion. The army's deficiency in anti-aircraft guns influenced Estonia to capitulate.
'lt is stated in Italy that the Baltic port will not toe evacuated since the Soviet is building a new port beside the existing harbour. Estonians are more cheerful, and believe the treaty opens possibilities of developing export trade westward via Murmansk, and it is even asserted that Estonia’s exports to the combatant nations will toe continued.
