TWINS BOTH DEAD
GIRL ATHLETES’ FATE MISSES D. AND B. LUMLEY MOTORING ACCIDENT CAR A SHAPELESS MASS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The death occurred in hospital of Miss Bernice Lumley, twin sister of Miss Doreen Lumley, who was previously reported to have died -as a result of injuries received when a light motor car in which they were travelling came into collision with a cream lorry on the roadway intersection at Mount Wellington late yesterday afternoon. The car was driven by Peter Sharp, aged 19, a motor engineering apprentice, Green Lane. He was discharged from hospital after treatment for minor injuries. The fourth occupant was Albert Francis Stanley, aged 19, a clerk, of Epsom. His right leg was injured, and his condition, which improved after his admission to hospital, is now fair. The car was crushed to a shapeless mass. Miss Doreen Lumley died shortly after being admitted to hospital and Miss Bernice Lumley died just before midnight. They were daughters of Mr. and Mrs. W. Lumley, Livingstone street, Grey Lynn. Popular Athletes
The Lumley twins were of cheerful and modest disposition, both being popular on the athletic field. MisS Doreen Lumley became prominent three years agq, running second to Miss Ida Campbell in the provincial 50yds. and 100yds. championships and second in the national 100yds. race. On Miss Campbell’s retirement last year, Miss Doreen Lumley succeeded as the outstanding woman sprinter in New Zealand. She represented, the Dominion at the British Empire Games in Sydney, and was accompanied by her sister. In March last Miss Doreen Lumley equalled the world’s 100yds. record, running the distance in llsec. She won the Auckland title and beat Miss Decima Norman, Australia. At the same meeting Miss Doreen Lumley won the 75yds. race. Her sister was third. Both were selected, for the Auckland reserve grade representatives which won the Korungaiti Bowl in the Rotorua open basketball tournament this year. Queen Carnival Success
Last week a complimentary dinner was tendered to Miss Doreen Lumley as the winner of the combined R.S.A. organisations’ queen carnival. As the representative of the Grey Lynn R.S.A. Cricket Club she won by a substantial majority, raising £2OO for the club. In a graceful speech Miss Doreen Lumley acknowledged the warm demonstration of popularity and esteen.
The inquest was opened this morning by the Coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. After evidence of identification the hearing was adjourned.
