WHAKATANE PROPOSAL “If we are going to be short of labour through men being away we must meet the position somehow. You cannot have both a labour shortage and short hours and maintain production,” said Mr. H. C. McCready at a meeting of the Whakatane County ‘Council, when moving that the council ask the Government to extend the working week from 40 hours. Councillors doubted whether such a request would have much effect. The Galatea station hands were dissatisfied, said Mr. T. G. H. Caw'te. Shepherds were working from 4 o’clock in the morning to 7 or 8 o’clock at night for 14s (id a day, while Land Development Scheme men were getting 17s (id a day for eight hours.
