EMPIRE TITLE
WRESTLING RIVALS MCCREADY—BLOMFIELD The wrestling match that most of the New Zealand ’Tans” have been looking forward to for weeks, that between Earl McCready and “Lofty” Blorr.field. will take place in Auckland this evening, with the British Empire heavyweight professional title at stake. The two big men have not met for two years, and in -the' meantime Blomfieid has been abroad and taken a fail out of Bronco Nagurski, while the latter was holder of the world heavyweight title. McCready also has been abroad, of course, having left New Zealand late in the 1936-37 season, and added many highly creditable performances to his record while wrestling in England and South Africa. Blomfieid will take the ring slightly heavier than the holder of the Empire title, but he will not be carrying anything superfluous in the way of poundage. He has had a busy season, and in his more recent matches he has shown a big improvement in speed. In his bout with Prince Bbu Pinder in Wellington, lately, he surprised even those who had been his greatest admirers, by the pace he put on against the Indian champion. Gisborne enthusiasts have seen McCready in action this season and his aggressive tactics against the powerful and experienced Rollend Kirchmeyer offered a reminder of many good contests in which he has appeared here in the past. The last previous appearance made by McCready in Gisborne was against Blomfieid m 1936-37, when they tussled for the Empire title in a mid-summer match here. That was a barn-storming fixture, but it provided Gisborne followers of the sport with the finest exhibition of the season. The verdict on the occasion was a draw, McCready retaining his championship
