SINKING OF COURAGEOUS
DEPTH CHANGES ESCAPED (Klee. Tel. Copyright—United l’russ Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 30. 9 a.m.) BERLIN, Sept. 29. The commander of the U-boat, who claims to have sunk the British aircraft carrier, Courageous, broadcasting from Wilhelmshavcn, said: “We were south-west of Ireland looking for a Sunday ‘joint’ and saw a British ship at 4 pan. We submerged and wailed for it to come nearer. Then suddenly we saw the Courageous with an escort of two planes and other vessels. We waited 90 minutes until the Courageous was athwart the bows by the periscope. Then we saw two destroyers coming towards us. We therefore fired our torpedoes, heard several detonations, and then the thresh of the destroyers’ propellers overhead.
“Depth charges shook cups from the tabic and the electric lights from their sockets. We dived deep. We were undamaged and stayed under for several hours.”
