OVERSEAS TRADE
FIGURES FOR AUGUST
EXPORTS £276,000 UP
IM I?ORT,S £ 1,272,0(H) LOWE R
Exports during August were valued at £276,000 more than in the corresponding period last year, according to the preliminary figures of overseas trade for the month, issued by the Customs Department in Wellington. Since 1933 there has been only one August, that of 1937, in which the present year’s total for the month has been exceeded.
Imports have decreased more than proportionately to the rise in exports. The valuation for the month is £1,272.000 lower than for August last year. It is £2.200.000 below the level recorded for the same month in 19. r. The marked difference can be taken as evidence of the policy of import restriction making its effect felt. One result is an excess of exports during August this year, the first since 1933.
The figures for August in the past seven years are:—
'Excess of Exports For the first eight months of the calendar year exports were £475,000 lower in value than for the corresponding period of the previous year, and £6,944,000 below the abnormal level reached in the first eight months of 1937. Imports at £36,440,000 are £343,000 below the level of 1938 and £139,000 less than during the corresponding total in 1937. The excess cf exports, £7.998.000, is £132,000 below that recorded last 3-ear. and is thus the smallest for the period since and including 1933The following table compares the eight monies ended August 31 for the past seven years:
There were no exports of .specie in August this year. Imports were valued at £6404. For the eight months ended August, exports were valued at £2795 and imports at £14,600.
