CRICKET IN WAIROA

ASSOCIATION MEETS AFFILIATION DESIRED SEASON’S ARRANGEMENTS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A decision to affiliate with the New Zealand Cricket Association was made at the annual meeting of the vVairoa Cricket Association on Tuesday evening. The suggestion that such a step be taken was made by Mr. L. Grieve, who, in outlining the advantages ol affiliation, stated that the New Zealand council frequently gave minor associations opportunities of meeting louring teams.

The motion was seconded by Mr. E. Beer, and carried. Mr. F. F. Couper presided over the meeting.

It was decided to open the 1939-40 season on Saturday, October 23, and that nominations of teams and players for the Hopper Shield competition close on October 24. Election of Officers

The election of officers resulted: — Patron, Mr. 11. L. Harker; president, Mr. H. M. Croker; vice-presidents, Messrs. G. Williamson, C. R. Sainsbury, V. E. Winter, and C. M. Pilkmgton; secretary, Mr. C. S. Gee; treasurer, Mr. F. J. Couper; auditor. Mr. J. J. Millar.

The question as to whether one-day. or two-day cricket should be adopted during the coming season provoked considerable discussion. In moving that it be a' recommendation to the management committee that one-day cricket be played, Mr. Beer stated the scheme hacl proved a success last year. In his opinion two-day cricket would not be in the best interests of the game here. Two-clay matches were practicable in the larger centres, where the teams were more evenly matched, but in Wairoa it might cause a falling off in interest.

The motion was seconded by Mr. W. 3. Bilbrough. An amendment to the effect that it be a recommendation to the management committee that two-day cricket be played during the coming season, was moved by Mr. T. Rowe ana seconded by Mr. H. M. Croker. Mr. Rowe contended that the introduction of two-day cricket would raise the standard of play in the district. On being put to the meeting the amendment was defeated and the motion was carried. Hopper Shield Points

It was decided that the points system for the Hopper Shield competition be as follows: —Outright win, 3 points; win on the first innings, 2 points: draw or tie, 1 point. The secretary was instructed to apnroach the Borough Council with a view to having the ground rolled and cut and put in playing condition prior lo the opening of the season. It. was agreed that play during the coming season commence at 1.30 p.m. and finish at 6.30 p.m. with an after noon tea adjournment of a quarter o' an hour.

Mr. Grieve moved that the associa.ion accept the responsibility of afternoon tea arrangements and make a small levy on the players each Saturday. The motion was seconded by Mr. Beer and carried. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the management committee that a levy of Is be struck on players for every playing Saturday. Of this amount 6d will go into the association’s funds and the balance will be the ground fee. The first meeting of the management committee will be held on Tuesday, October 10.
