POWER-BOAT RACING
GOOD PROGRESS MADE PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE GISBORNE CLUB MEETING' Satisfaction with the progress made during the past season was expressed by members of the Gisborne Power Eoat Club at the annual meeting held last evening. The commodore, Mr. G. AV. Armstrong, presided over a large attendance. ,
The annual report indicated that the membership of the club stood at SG. a very satisfactory figure in view of the handicaps confronting boating enthusiasts m Gisborne. The regatta held last year on the Turanganui River had been an unqualified success and placed the club on a good standing with organisations such as the Waikanae Beach Society and the Thirty-Thousand Club, two bodies with whom collaboration was essential.
Immediately after the regatta it was decided to erect a suitable boat shed on the Kaili bridge site, a building committee being formed for this purpose, The necessary timber was procured and, headed by the treasurer, Mr, A. F. Langridge, the foundation stone was laid early in June. Since then, work has proceeded enthusiastically, if somewhat intermittently. Whilst construction up to date had been carried out by voluntary labour, the roll call of late had been such that the treasurer strongly advocated the introduction of “conscription” if the slipway is to be completed on the due date.
Donations Acknowledged
Donations received from the following are acknowledged in the report. Messrs G. Biogg. G. AV. Armstrong, A. F. Salmon, lan Page, E. A. Colictt, AA r . Hegarty and F. Green.
It was reported that the financial position of the club was sound, the balance sheet indicating that a liberal sum would be carried forward for the incoming season. Major items of expenditure were the regatta and the boat-shed work. The loss suffered by the club through the death of Mr. Gordon Morice, who was lost at sea some weeks ago, was referred to and a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the deceased was passed. A tribute was paid to the patrc.i. Captain AVest, whoso . enthusiastic support and collaboration had greatly added to the value of the club membership. Officers were elected as follows: — Patron, Captain West; commodore. Mr. G. W. Armstrong; vice-commodore, Mr. W. Hegarty; rear-commodore, Mr. E. Uptc'a; committee. Messrs. G. Biogg, I. Page, L. Scott, N. H. Bull, R. Stokes, V. Nalder, E. Bates, S. F. Saunders and F. Green; treasurer, Mr. A. F. Langridge; bon. auditor, Mr. R. E. Gambrill; acting secretary, Mr. J. R. Grant. Members spoke in eulogistic terms of the service given to the club by the secretary, Mr. Grant, during the past year, the strong position, of the club being largely attributed to the good work of the secretary.
It was decided to open the season on November 11 and to hold the annual regatta during the first favourable tide next February. The following sub-committee was appointed to draw up racing rules:— Messrs. AY. Hegarty, R. Stokes, L Scott and G. Biogg.
