RAIDS AND SHELLING CONTINUOUS HAH. PUBLIC BUILDINGS AFLAME FOOD POSITION DIFFICULT (British Official Wireless.!. Reed. 11.45 a.m. RUGBY, Sept. 27. Some indication of the terrible ordeal the city underwent before surrendering was given by the Warsaw radio yesterday on the twenty-first day of the siege. This message, describing the continuous air raids and shelling by heavy artillery was published by the Ministry of Information. It says: “Hundreds of incendiary bombs caused numerous fires. Most public buildings in the city are in flames. The number- of fires probably exceeds 50. Fire brigades and civilians are, with the utmost heroism, fighting the flames, their task being made more difficult owing to the scarcity of water.

“The food situation is also difficult, especially the distribution, which is very complicated owing to the continual shelling and bombing. Hundreds of horses which are killed by shells in the city’s st , re fts are immediately butchered and distributed for consumption. The public utility institutions are performing miracles.

The Manchester Guardian, commenting on Warsaw’s resistance, said: “To find that, instead of help, we can only give our admiration is a terrible wound to our pride and our conscience.’’
