A Shanghai report states the Domei News Agency says that the Japanese are within 20 miles of Changhsa, whose defences are crumbling. Five Chinese divisions are in full retreat. The Chinese dead in a fortnight number 8200. Despatches from Weilin admitted that General Chien minimised the seriousness of the Japanese drive, but insisted that the Chinese army fundamentally is not menaced by it, since in the South China area a great number of skilled Chinese are operating behind the enemy lines. It is felt that the Japanese will refrain from a further advance westward due to the mountain defences
