MATAWHERO CATTLE FAIR DEMAND MAINTAINED The brisk competition which ruled at the Matnwhero Cattle Fair yesterday morning continued throughout the afternoon. One Hawke's Bay buyer was active, but local competition was very strong, resulting in values being well above those of the spring fair last year. Cows, in particular, were in good demand. The only line of bullocks was an exceptionally good pen of 4 —-year offered by Messrs. Hutchinson Bros., which realised £9 12s. A good pen of 3-year steers entered by

Mr. R. G. Sherwood Hale brought £7 13s. Two-year steers made up to £6 13s for a pen from the same vendor, but generally the prices ranged from £5 Is to £0 Is

Yearling steers made to £4 10s for a pen sold on behalf of Mr. R. . W. Coop, otherwise to £4, with medium size and condition lots at £2 9s to £2 13s. Empty cows made £4 in one instance and for those in medium to light condition, which were in good remand, the prices were round about £2 10s to £2 15s. Grown heifers sold :h £0 for a pen of P.A., with great size and condition, but generally realised from £4 Gs to £5 7s. Twoyear heifers were scarce, a good-con-ditioned pen making £3 11s. Yearling heifers brought £1 4s to £2 17s. The store offering totalled 1935. The best return for cows, £lO 14s. was for a special entry of outstaiuL ing beasts from Messrs. Hutchinson Brothers, the price being the best far.fat cows for possibly two years. NORTHERN PRODUCE RATES PRIDES LITTLE CHANGED Pr’ces for Pukekohe produce, f o.r Pukekohe, are still the same as t.hor' ruling last week. The demand for cabbages and cauliflowers has fur'lhe: improved and is being filled readily, but carrots and swedes could at present be sold in larger quantities

than are available here. Difficr”y was experienced early in the week in filling orders, and it is obvious that temporarily these two lines will be practically unprocurable at Pukekohe. 'Price quotations now are: Drumhead cabbages, 5s a Chapman bag and 7s 2d a sack; Savoy cabbages, 6s a Chapman -bag and 8s 9d a sack; cauliflowers, Gs 9d a Chapman bag and 9s 9d a sack; carrots, 11s a sugar bag; parsnips. 7s 2d a sugar bag; swedes, 5s a sugar bag.
