On Thursday night, Mrs. Mcßeath, the producer ot the musical comedy, “The Cingalee,” was the chief guest at a delightfully informal supper party given by Mrs. W. Kohn at her home in liussell street after the show. The decorations were artistically carried out with stocks and Idelang poopies, shading from cream to deed gold, intermingled with richly-tinted foliage. . i The hostess looked smart in a frock of orange cloque printed in black and white, and Mrs. Mcßeath wore ah' elegayit frock’ of black ring velvet cut on simple lines. Advice has been received by Mtf. and Mrs. H. Shaw, Kihikihi, Waikatd, that their daughter, Miss Jessie Shawl, has won the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s cup in the open contralto championship of the Sydney Eisteddfod. Miss Shaw has been h pupil of Mr. Roland Foster at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music during the last year. There were 154 entries in the contralto championship event, and Miss Shaw’s success is regarded as highly meritorious. What Can I do?
At the meeting convened by the St. John Ambulance Association, Wellington, to set up a women’s war committee, Mr. A. F. Falconar, secretary of the commandery, in the course of a brief speech, related a telling anecdote in support of his appeal for women to co-operate in W’ar work. A member of the association, he said, once offered her services to a hospital. “But what do you know?” asked the doubtful matron. “Well, not very much,” replied flic applicant, “but I can do what I am told.” This was one of the first rules of co-operation, said the speaker.
