QUESTION OF PAY
MEN ON ACTIVE SERVICE WAIROA PROPOSAL. (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A recommendation by the finance committee, that in the event of any of the council’s permanent employees giving up their position to serve in any capacity in connectipn with the war they be paid the difference between their pay when leaving the council’s employment and what they receive for their war services, and that their positions be kept open for them, came before the Wairoa Borough Council on Friday evening, but discussion on it was deferred until the next meeting.
The recommendation was objected to by Cr. L. E. Galbraith, who expressed the opinion that such a move would be grossly unfair to the ratepayers.
Cr. J. B. Cook also opposed part of the recommendation, but stated that he was in favour of the men’s positions being kept open. 'J'. Cr. J. O. Scott expressed himself as being in favour of the proposal. The Mayor, Mr. H. L. Harker, eaid the finance committee had gone Into the position very fully, and he also explained that other local bodies were adopting similar proposals. He was in favour of making the standard comparable with the best and not the worst.
Cr. Galbraith moved tliat in view of the fact that two councillors were absent from Hie meeting, the question should be deferred until the next meeting, the motion being seconded by Cr. Scott and carried.
The Mayor asked that his vote be recorded against this decision.
