WEEK-END RAIN
HEAVY DISTRICT FALL MAIN ROUTES UNAFFECTED RELIEF TO PASTURES Heavy rain fell throughout the Gisborne and East Coast districts during the week-end, bringing great relief to the pastures after a period of very low rainfall. The growth of grass had been at a standstill and up to Saturday there was a threat ot a drought.
The resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, reported this morning that all main highways were clear. He had been in communication with Opotiki. and the Waioeka Valley road had given the early service ear from Gisborne no trouble, while the route to Cape Runaway also was open. The East Coast and other highways in the G: borne district had presented no difficulty to traffic this morning. The rain that fell in Gisborne during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day totalled 1.85 in„ according to the harbour signal station reading, and that figure represented the heaviest day's rain Gisborne had experienced since April. The tally for the 48 hours ended this morning was 2.28 in.
On parts of the East Coast the rainfall was much heavier. A l’eport from Tikitiki stated that 4.05 in. fell there during the 24 hours up to 9 a.m. today, while the total for the week-end was 4.87 in. The rivers were running high in that area and there were a few minor slips on the district roads, but no interruption of traffic.
