ITALY PERTURBED
EVENTS IN EUROPE PRESS ATTACKS ALLIES “CRIMINALITY” OF WAR CONCERN FOR BALKANS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 23, 2.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 22. The Rome correspondent of the New York Times reported by radiophone that Central European events moved badly for Italy to-day.
There was a more vigorous press campaign about the “absurdity and criminality” of continuing the war the criminals being Britain and France.
The war has not touched Italy yet, but if it continues on the present lines vital Italian interests will be involved.
Apart from an apparently sincere belief that the war has cea o ca to have a raison d’etre and humanitarian motives, Itaiy has material reasons for seeing the end before the Balkans are involved. News that the final Russian-German division of Poland does not provide a Polish Stale based on ethnic frontiers is most disturbing to Italy. It means that Italian suggestions have been ignored and that Russia and Germany are destroying one of Italy’s prime reasons for accepting Poland’s defeat.
