PLAYING SUCCESS
P.B, CRICKET SEASON LEST YEAR TO 1930 KEEN COMPETITION PLAY REDUCTION OF EXPENSE “The 19.38-29 season, though not a success financially, proved probably Ihe most- successful with regard to play yet experienced by the association. Only one day was lost through rain, and the competitions in ail grades proved most interesting and keenly fought out; so much so, that Ihe winning teams in the four competitions were not decided until the last matches," states the annual report of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, prepared for the annual meeting next Tuesday evening. The loss on the season was £46 4s Bd, compared with £4B for the previous season. Expenses were kept down to a minimum, the report points out, and the financial position is sound despite the successive losses of the past two years. The transfer of the Oval to the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, effected during the year, will reduce slightly the outgoings for succeeding seasons without reducing materially the rights of the association to use the grounds. The season’s competition results were as under:— Senior A Grade Championship.— G.H.5.0.8., 66 points; City, 60 points; .Marist, 52 points; Old Boys, nil. In representative play, the report records that the first elimination match between Poverty Bay and VV'aiapu was abandoned owing to rain, and the second played in Raatoria, was won by Poverty Bay by an innings and 84 runs. The Kirk Cup match against Hawke’s Bay, played in Gisborne, resulted in a win for Poverty Bay by 10 wickets. In a senior B grade representative match. Poverty Bay drew with Wairoa, in Gisborne; and a return match in Wairoa was also drawn. Another senior B grade engagement with Hawke's Bay, in Gisborne, gave Poverty Bay a win by six wickets. Tournament and Challenge Games Poverty Bay's participation in the Auckland provincial tournament is recorded, the team from Gisborne, playing in Auckland, having won three 'matches, drawn one, and lost one. The team missed a chance to meet Auckland in the final, by a small difference in the team averages as compared with those of Auckland Suburbs, the competition points of Poverty Bay and Suburbs being equal. Wickets at the Oval again showed an improvement during the season, owing to the excellent work of the (groundsman, Mr. C. Whiteley, and the top-dressing given them during the off-season holds out the prospect of further improvement during the ensuing season. Plans made by the committee jo lay an additional wicket down, in order to obviate the necessity of using the concrete wicket at the High School, have been deferred The work will be done as soon as more settled conditions arc restored. The sterling services of the Poverty Bay Umpires’ Association are recorded with keen appreciation, and the report adds that visiting teams have spoken in the highest terms of the standard of umpiring in this district. Appreciation is extended also to the ladies who, throughout last season, conducted the afternoon lea booth, thereby adding £SO to the funds already accumulated from this source, the credit of the tea account now being £438 Many others who helped to keen the game going on its present high plane are accorded the thanks of the association, and a continuance of their support is counted bn with confidence.
