FAMILY VIEW OF WAR OBEDIENCE TO LEADER In family circles in Germany before the outbreak of war a remark symbolical of the attitude of parents was: “If our leader says ‘go’ our sons must, But Britain is so strong now we do not think he will dare.” This was the observation of Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, touring manager of the Automobile Association (Auckland), who has returned after eight months’ touring abroad. He was accompanied by Mrs. Champtaloup. “Universally we found the desire was for peace,” continued Mr. Champtaloup. “There :was little evidence of the individual ot one nation hating the individual of a neighbouring country. In view of all we have seen and heard, We are convinced of the wisdom of Britain’s policy of leaflet distribution in Germany at the beginning of hostilities. It is from internal unrest that it appears a strong force may develop against Hitlerism.” There appeared to be universal support for Hitler by tjie youth of Germany, who had obviously been trained from.the cradle to accept the doctrine of force, continued Mr. Champtaloup. The people generally showed every friendliness to the visitor.

“Throughout the world we found that by treating foreign officials with the same respect and courtesy we would expect foreigners to display in our own country all doors were opened to us and every assistance was forthcoming,” said Mr. Champtaloup,
