EFFECT ON REVENUE SOCIAL SECURITY FUND LIGHT ON .ESTIMATES

(Special to the Herald.) TE ARAROA, this day. The September meeting of the Waiapu Hospital Board was held in Te Araroa this week, those present being Messrs A. J. H." Kirkham, chairman, H. Rylands, W. H. O. Johnston C. H. McCracken, W. F. Metcalfe, V. G. H. Rickard, H. Williams and C. R. E Wood. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. A. B. Williams through illness, and a message of sympathy was sent to him.

The Director-General of Health, Dr. M. H. Watt, wrote inquiring regarding the possible effect on the board’s estimates of revenue from the social security fund.—-The secretary reported that he had notified the directorgeneral that iri view of payments to be made fitdm the social security fund for 'the treatment of patientsr he-ex-pected the board’s revenue to bo £ISOO higher than was estimated for the 'financial, year.

Nurses From Overseas

The Director-General of Health advised that a letter had been received from the Society for the Oversea Settlement of British Women, England, suggesting that if nurses were required in New Zealand, the society would be prepared to select nurses, paying their own. fares, provided positions would definitely be open for them on arrival.—ln view of the war situation no action was taken. A letter was received from the Hospital Boards’ Association about the proposed‘ industrial union of hospital board employers, and it was decided to become a member of the union. Nurse P. Parr, district nurse at Tikitiki, reported that the work of repapering the hall and passage of the residence had; been satisfactorily carried out by voluntary workers For this a vote of thanks to Messrs. M. Hyland, Rickard, Peachey, Stokes and J. Hyland was accorded, The Minister' of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, advised that provision for the tar-sealing of roads had bte made on the current year’s estinWes as follows: Tokomaru Bay, Te Puia Springs, £1700; Tikitiki* £I2OO. It is hoped to have this work commenced during the coming seasiqn. The Waiapu County Council wrote requesting that the board in future should send delegates to the council meetings for an explanation of the * annual estimates before they were completed.—lt was decided that the board would 'be glad to. comply with the request in cases where any special items of expenditure were proposed. Accounts amounting to £B9l were passed for payment. The medical superintendent, Dr. B. C. Grant, reported that admissions numbered 25, patients discharged 20, deaths two. Patients remaining in hospital numbered 24. Seven operations had been performed. Social Security Books The matron, Miss I. L. Cornish, said that considerable difficulty was being experienced in obtaining the numbers of patients’ social security contribution books, which were required by the Government in all ca£es where patients were admitted to public hospitals. Miss D. A. Mackereth, sister m charge of 1 the Waipiro Bay Maternity Hospital, reported: Admissions, six; discharged, seven; confinements, seven; remaining in hospital, five patients. The gtoundsman, Mr. H. S. Chalmers, said that since the last meeting the gas supply had been fairly good, there being sufficient for all purposes. The following produce has been supplied to the hospital during August: Vegetables, 9cwt. 3qrs.; eggs, 1604; milk, 273 gallons.
