The death has occurred of Mr. Douglas Louis Poppclwell, who had been Mayor of Gore for 10 terms.

A progressive administrator, works carried out during his early terms of office included the construction of the Gore traffic bridge, the introduction of drainage, water, and lighting schemes. He was connected with numerous organisations at various times. He was the first president oi' the Gore Chamber of Commerce. He was a recognised authority on flora and fauna and Maori traditions, lie secured Gore’s large bush domain at Hokonui Hills from the Government, a senior member of the Gore Ear. he was president for a period of ihe Southland branch of the Law Society.
