FOOD SOURCES DESTROYED
NAZI INVASION OF POLAND YEARS OF SUPPLY LOST NO RELIANCE ON SOVIET (Re-cd. Sept. 22, noon.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 21. The adviser to the United States Commerce Department said that the German invasion, of Poland had destroyed one of the most important sources of food for importation to Germany. Polish food in 1938 was valued at £7,678,400. He doubted whether Germany would be able to exploit Poland’s resources to provide a normal peacetime food production for several years. He added that the Soviet was unable to supply Germany with large quantities of food. Even normally Russia’s domestic production was insufficient. He also drew attention to the Department of Statistics as showing a steady decline in German, imports from Russia over the five years ended December, 1938, reducing from £17,308,800 in 1935 to £3,807,200 in 1938.
