REFEREES’ SOCIAL
RUGBY SEASON SEQUEL TRIBUTE TO COLLEAGUE Marking the close of the 1939 Rugby season, a social gathering held by the Poverty Bay Rugby Referees’ Association last evening proved highly enjoyable. The occasion was taken to tender to Mr. H. R. Heiford, a member of the association, the compliments of his colleagues upon his earjy selection for service with the special New Zealand Military Force. The chair v/as taken by Mr. K. R. Waite, who proposed the loyal toast, and also that of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, Mr. J. E. Mercer responding. Other toasts honoured were:—"District Rugby Clubs,” proposed by Mr. H. Hunter and responded to by Messrs. R. J. Quinn iMarist), J. E. Mercer (Old Boys). W. Morrison (H. 5.0.8.), and H. Airey (Celtic); "Company Sergeant-Major H. R. Heiford," proposed by the chairman; "Ambulance Services," proposed bv Mr. L. R. Stichbury and responded to by Messrs. W. E. Bullivant and 11. Hunter; "Poverty Bay Rugby Referees' Association,” proposed by Mr. J. E. Mercer and-.responded to by Mr. K. R. Waite; “Classification Committee," proposed -by Mr. W r . J. Wilkie and replied to by the chairman; “Apnointment Boards,” proposed by Mr. T J. Kay and responded to by Messrs. V. Norman and L. R. Stichbury; "The Entertainers,” proposed by Mr. A. Gabolinscy, and responded to by Messrs. W. Wade, J. Lyle, and T. Cornish; and “The Chairman.”
Messrs. L. Bignell, J. E. Mercer, E. Sharp, W. Wade, and J. Lyle contributed items to the programme.
