■ COOK COUNTY ROADS FAVOURABLE WEATHER : REPORT BY ENGINEER -“Weather conditions once again have been particularly good,” stated the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, at to-day’s meeting of the Cook County Council/“and the roads generally are in first class order. “Maintenance wbrk has been ,given careful attention and throughout the county a general improvement in the condition of the roads is anticipated. This can be attributed in some measure to the development of metal and gravel supplies in different areas. "The highways generally are in good’ condition. The reconstruction wbrk on both the Patutahi-Rere and Gisborne-Ormond, via Waiohika highways has reached a stage when they cran be sealed at an early date. “Wlllan's bridge is progressing as rftpidly as possible, but extensions have been necessary to the lengths of the piles to provide proper foundation.
“The Tiniroto cottage Is completed, and the surfaceman is now in occupation. The Tahunga cottage is well under construction.
“The drag-lines have been kept in steady operation during the month, and the quality of the gravel from the Patuthhi drag-line is proving up to expectations. This is being largely used on the Patutahi-Rere main highway. “The contractor at Hie Patutahi quarry, Mr. K. E. Buscke, has managed to keep pace with the requirements.
“The Waterfall Hill plantation has been completely transformed during the month, and the whole area is nbw planted. The dry spell is having a detrimental effect on the new planting. Approval has been obtained from the Social Security Departmenf to utilise a gang on plantation work for a short period.”
