COUPONS FOR PETROL
ISSUE IN GISBORNE DEMAND DEALT WITH APPLICATIONS STILL MADE Applications for petrol coupons and licenses are stiff being received and dealt with by the postal authorities at Gisborne, but,the peak demand is over now and the applications are of a more spasmodic nature.
Tiie first day on which the issue of the coupons was made was on Friday, the busiest period being in the morning. Friday afternoon also was busy, but the demand slackened off on Saturday. The action of the postal officers in working longer hours on Friday and Saturday resulted in the pressure being considerably relieved. The task of issuing the coupons was carried out without a hitch and was a triumph for the organised work of the staff.
Applications for the issue of permits for petrol for commercial vehicles also were dealt with, while motor-cyclists received their authority for supplies.
In some instances persons who attended to obtain permits on behalf of vehicle-owners unable to make personal application were unable to obtain them, having failed to come provided with the written authority, with the specimen signature thereon.
Tiie magnitude of the task of the issue in the larger centres can be recognised from the fact that in Auckland on the first day of the issue of coupons 8500 applications were dealt with at the chief post office. At peak periods 10 sheets of coupons were issued per minute.
