U.S. TENNIS CHAMPIONS

RIGGS AND MISS MARBLE BRILLIANT BOY BEATEN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 19, 9 a.m.) FOREST HILLS, Sept. 17Playing cool, cautious tennis, li. L. Riggs halted the meteoric progress of the 19-year-old Van Horn in straight sets in the final of the men’s singles in the National tennis championships. Riggs won C —4, G —2, 6—4.

Tired bv a gruelling five-set match on each of the two preceding days, Van Horn showed occasional flashes of the form by which he eliminated Sabin and Bromwich on successive days, but he was mostly wild and ineffective.

There were times when Van Horn found touch and blasted winners that left Riggs shaking his head in despair, but they were all too infrequent. . Van Horn's first appearance in the national singles last year saw him take a set from Budge. To-day’s matches were played m a high ivind. which virtually wrecked Miss Alice Marble’s game, although she defeated Miss Helen Jacobs in the final of Die women’s singles, G —o, B—lo, 6—4. Her overhead play particularly was wretched. Miss Jacobs was competent, but her strokes lacked Miss Marble’s depth and power.
