CHARGE OF GAMBLING TERM OF SIX MONTHS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. “When this man was adjudged bankrupt his assets apart from 1130 worth of furniture, were nil,” said Mr. G. Meredith, for the Crown, when John Horace Powell, a cabinetmaker, Howick, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, with having failed to lceep proper books for three years prior to bankruptcy in February 1938, and further that he brought about his bankruptcy by gambling in the month prior to bankruptcy. Mr. Meredith said that tiie proved creditors represented a total of £SOB. In January 1938, Powell had £135 in cash.

For Powell, Mr. Bryce Hart, said that lie admitted gambling, hoping to win enough to pay his creditors. The Magistrate, Mr. C. R. On' Walker, said he regarded the second charge more seriously than the first, knowing the attitude of tiie Supreme Court in sucli matters. On the charge of gambling lie was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment and, on the first charge, he was convicted -and ordered to conic up for sentence if called on within six months.
