MAORI WOMEN ACT
PATRIOTIC EFFORTS NEW COMMITTEE FORMED FENDS FOR WAR PURPOSES A substantial attendance of Maori ladies was recorded at a meeting held on Friday 1 evening to discuss the best means of raising funds for patriotic purposes, and all present pledged themselves to work unremittingly in support of the war effort. Branch committees were formed for the different Maori settlements, -and it was proposed that each should co-opt native residents of their own areas and organise functions in aid of funds. The meeting was presided over by Mrs W. E. Bullivant, and those present included Mesdames Te H. Kingi, M. Kaiha, Mihikorc Tureia, Mere Waka, M. Keiha, Rupi Haapu, Kura Te Kani, Mate Kaua, Ina Rcbb, May Pitt, Elizabeth Campbell. Patehcma Halbert, Marie Ferris, Kino Kingi, Mere Rangi, Kairangatira Kingi, Maude Thompson, Heni Eade, Matahaere Ai'apata, Jane Ferris, Hera Poraka, Mihi Haruru, and Takawhaki Kerckere. District Committees After the chairman had explained the purpose of the gathering, and the general objectives aimed at, it was decided unanimously to form the Maori Ladies’ Patriotic Committee, and to commence at once the raising of funds. The following district committees were formed: — 'Whangara.—Riria Priestley. Kuru Te Kani and Wairomana Hinaki. Muriwai. —Rota Kemp, Hine Ehau, Hera Tawiri, Kehu Wirihana and Maora Kingston. Ngai Taone.—lna Robb, Mate Kaua, Heni Eade and Mabel Keiha. Waituhi (Takitimu). —Riria Winiata. Patehema Halbert, Rewai Teka (Mrs. Reid), and Rere Tupara. Rawiri. —Nai Maki, Emere Kiwi, Papers Kerekere, and Te Roha Rangi. Mangatu.—Mrs. Winiata, Mrs. W. Alexander, Muhi Wainui and Papaku Bartlett. Awapuni.—Mere Te Kai. Mere Rangi, Hariata Korotau and Heni Tipuna. Waihirere. Kairangatira Kingi, Rupi Haapu, Cora Tuhoe and Kino Kingi. Te Karaka.—Lena Ruru. Executive Members The central committee will consist of Mrs. W. E. Bullivant, chairman, Mrs. Reta Keiha, hon. secretary, Mesdames Te Kani. Priestley, Wawatai, Henare Kingi, Kemp, Tawiri, Eade, K'obb, Halbert, Winiata, Maki, Kiwi, Alexander, Bartlett, and Miss Lena Ruru.
It was decided to organise a “bring and buy” day at the premises latelyvacated by Mr. E. A. Evans in Fitzherbert street, this function to take place on Friday, September 22. The central committee will arrange for the use by other committees on different days of these premises, which have been placed at its disposal by Mr. P. Keiha.
