OVERWHELMING REACTION
INVASION BY RUSSIANS BRITISH CABINET TO MEET (Reed. Sept. 18, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 17. The London office of the United Press of America reports that the Soviet move caused an overwhelming re-action in London. There is no attempt to conceal the magnitude of the blow to the Allies’ cause.
Government sources have intimated that Cabinet will probably meet late to-day and a session of Parliament will be called for to-morrow. Mr. Arthur Greenwood, acting leader of the Opposition, said: —“One thing is certain; whatever happens, Britain’s pledge to Poland will be honoured.” Under the Anglo--Polish agreement, if the Poles formally declare the Russian advance an act of aggression Britain will be obliged to assist.
Official circles in Tokio state that Russian military action is a “natural result of the Russian-Japanese armistice, which relieved the Soviet of immediate pressure in the Far East.”
