LOSS OF THE OLIVEBANK The loss of the Finnish four-masted barque Olivcbank, which struck a mine off the Danish coast on. Friday, recalls the part that the war of 191418 played in the last days of the sailing" ships.. The disappearance of sail was accelerated by the large number of vessels sunk during the war. If sailing ship owners were able to keep their vessels out of the danger area they earned large freights, but the craft were easy victims of the German submarines, and many were lost. During the vvar, Captain Gustav Erikson, who later became owner of the Olivcbank, had a fairly large fleet., and was fortunate in losing only two ships by submarine attack.
