BIG FIRE IN SYDNEY

OIL AND PAINT STOCKS FIREMEN’S HARD TIME (Reed. Sept. 14. 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 14. A fire among the oil and paint stock in G. E. Crane and Sen’s warehouse adjacent to Circular Quay last night caused a heavy blanket of smoke, all parts of the city being penetrated.

Tall buildings in the danger zone gave nearly 100 firemen a worrying time and several were overcome by smoke.

The fire originated in the basement, which had to be flooded with water from dozens of hoses. Several firemen wearing smoke helmets had to swim through the water to reach safety.
