Sept. 14, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 13. Speaking in the House of Lords to-day, the Loid President of;the Council, Earl Stanhope, said that the Eastern Front remained the centre of operations. “The Germans arc endeavouring to force a decision in this theatre before Uiev are compelled to transfer their formations to the west, he declared. “Their hopes so far have been frustrated owing' to the indomitable spirit- of the Poles.” A Warsaw message quotes a Polish communique which claims that the Poles routed a Herman division at Eutno, west of Warsaw, and that 1000 men were taken prisoner. Ihe Warsaw radio stated that the Poles to-day had thrown the Germans “far back from Warsaw” and were dining tu enemy in retreat with a series of swift counter-blows west and south-west of the capital. A Berlin message says it is officially reported that the fortified town of Modlin in Poland has been completely surrounded by the German forces. The actual fate of Lodz is uncertain. The Germans issue continued reports that Lodz is in their hands intact, but the Poles claim that they have recaptured it. To-night’s French war communique issued in Paris states: “Our troops have improved the whole of their positions taken during the last few clays. The naval forces arc taking vigorous action against submarines. Our air force activity has been reduced owing to bad weather. ncommunique confirms further substantial progress of the French pincer movement on the Western Front from the vest and east' of Saarbrucken. An earlier French staff communique disclosed that the “first major aerial battle” for the supremacy of the western skies-was reportedly to have continued throughout the day, but slackened off at nightfall. The Premier of France, M. Daladier, said that the meeting of the Allied Supreme War Council had convinced linn that the Allies were endowed with the unshakcablc resolution to conduct the war to final victory and there would be no defection in the struggle against Germany.
