NEUTRALITY OF SWEDEN

OPINIONS OF EULER FACTOR FOR PEACE Advice has been received by the Consul for Sweden in New Zealand that the Swedish Parliament was summoned +o a special session last Saturday for the purpose of taking measures for the maintenance of Swedish neutrality, and l’o~ the provision of its population.

At the opening of the session, King Gustaf, in a speech from the Throne, said that it was a defeat for humanity ■that the powers of peace had succumbed to those of war. He expressed Sweden’s decision to work for the spirit of reconciliation, which was bound to triumph, and he characterised the. neutral States as a factor for peace. The King further stressed the necessity for maintaining and strengthening the solidarity of the northern countries.

As an additional Budget for the current year 173,000,000 crowns (approximately £NZ12,000,000) has been voted for defence purposes, and the Government has asked for a further 330,000,000 crowns for the same purpose.

A ban on the export of several important Swedish export commodities, including wood, wood pulp, newsprint, iron and' steel, has been issued. The purpose, however, is not to prevent exports, but only to enable a strict control to be exercised.
