OBITUARY
MRS. HANNAH HUDSON The death of Mrs. Hannah Hudson occurred at her residence, 22 School road, last night after an illness lasting four weeks, and removed one who had been in New Zealand for the past 44 years, the greatest of which time was spent in Gisborne.
Born in Etton, Yorkshire, England, 77 years ago, Mrs. Hudson was married to Mr. Thomas Hudson, who predeceased her by three years. After their marriage they went to live in Hull, then migrated to Brisbane, where they lived for eight years, during which time Mrs. Hudson took a keen interest in political matters in support of the Labour Party. Coming to New Zealand 44 years ago, they settled in Tikikino, Hawa j s Bay, and were there for 10 years, during which time she took a keen interest in social activities of the district, and gave, much assistance to mothers during tire nursing period. Her last 23 years were soent in the Gisborne district, where Mrs. Hudson continued her activity in support of the Labour movement.
She is survived by three :ons and two daughters, all of whom arc living in Gisborne. The f amily cci iprises Messrs. Alfred, Harry and Richard Hudson, Mrs. F. Williams, and Miss A. E. Hudson. In addition, there are 10 grand-children, while there is also one surviving brother, Mr. James Hudson, Hawera.
The interment will take place rt the Taruheru cemetery to-morrow, following a service in Cochrane’s private chapel at 1.45' p.m.
MR. GEORGE POPPELWELL
As already reported, the death occurred in Wanganui on Monday of a former well-known resident of Napier and Hastings, Mr. Sebastian George Poppelwell, at the age of 78 years. His father, Captain .1. Poppelwell, was one of the early pioneers of the Dominion. Captain Poppelwell, a Yorkshireman, had the distinction of sailing to Now Zealand in his own ship, bringing with him several of the elder members of his family. Mr. S. G. Poppelwell was one of the original founders of the Evening News, a Napier paper. lie also became a member of the Knights of Labour, a liberal reform society which included in its ranks 31 members of Parliament.
Following t his newspaper activity, Air. Poppelwell went into partnership with Livsav and Lynn, successfully carrying on flax milling at Te Ante. Paki Paid, and later in North Auckland. When the price of flax do dined, he returned to Hawke’s Bay about 1 f)l2He leaves three sons and one daughter, Mr. H. Poppelwell, Hastings, Air. G. B. Poppelwell, Napier, Mr. F. Poppelwell, Gisborne, and Airs. Shone, Gisborne.
The funeral was held in Hastings on Tuesday.
