GERMANS IN COURT
ALLEGED SHIP DESERTION TWO YOUTHS REMANDED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Rudolph Schmuesser, aged 18, appeared on remand in the Police Court charged with deserting from the German ship Dortmund. ■He had been working in a mine at Glen Aflon and was arrested when lie registered in Auckland as an alien. Yesterday another German. Paul Breur, a seaman, aged 19, was arrested on a similar charge. He had been working at Glen Alton. They appeared in the Police Court together to-day on a desertion charge and also a furthe* charge of landing in New Zealand without permits.
Schmuesser said he had consulted a solicitor and asked for a remand until his counsel was available. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, said that nothing had yet been decided concerning Germans residing in New Zealand. The police suggested an adjournment until Tuesday.
In granting a remand, the magistrate said there world be no further remands. Each was liable to 12 months' imprisonment on one of the charges.
