JAMBOREE CANCELLED
BOY SCOUT GATHERING EFFECT OF HOSTILITIES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Because of the war, the New Zealand Centennial Boy Scout jamboree will not now take place, stated Com-j.asi-ojver J. E. F. Vogel, at the jamboree headquarters at Wellington yesterday. It was to have been the biggest international youth gathering ever held in this country. He recalled that .hortly before the outbreak of hos.l ties ihe jamboree headquarters an:ounced that in the event of war ,t .vould be necessary to consider cancelling die jamboree. Now the or.an.'sers had decided not to carry on ,/itii tile arrangements. The fact that ho camp site at Heretaunga was no longer available and no other suitable ite could be found, definitely precluded holding the jamboree. Besides Ihis, the organisers were now unable to ob'ain technical assistance, supplies facilities and amenities which, m normal times, were being willingly offered to Boy Scouts. Moreover, many of those throughout New Zealand who had been giving time and energy to the preparatory work and who would be taking part ill the administration of the camp would now be called on f o give their services elsewhere and. as a result, the personnel for staffing the jamboree would no longer be available. These were some of the reasons which prompted the jamboree headquarters to decide reluctantly that he jamboree could not be held.
